The eclipse will begin in Asia and trace a path across to the western US

An "annular eclipse" will be visible from a 240 to 300km-wide swathe of Earth stretching from Asia across the Pacific to the western US on Monday.

The eclipse is happening at a time that the Moon is at its farthest from the Earth, and therefore does not block out the Sun completely.

Viewers can see the resulting "ring of fire" in China from sunrise local time on Monday (from 22:06 GMT Sunday).

Many of the sites were bubbling methane that has been stored for millennia

Scientists have identified thousands of sites in the Arctic where methane that has been stored for many millennia is bubbling into the atmosphere.

The methane has been trapped by ice, but is able to escape as the ice melts.

Writing in the journal Nature Geoscience, the researchers say this ancient gas could have a significant impact on climate change.

Methane is the second most important greenhouse gas after CO2 and levels are rising after a few years of stability.

There are many sources of the gas around the world, some natural and some man-made, such as landfill waste disposal sites and farm animals.

Tracking methane to these various sources is not easy.

One of my favorite bloggers is The Sensuous Curmudgeon. He exemplifies the holy writ of curmudgeonhood, “The Curmudgeon’s Handbook,” a compendium of extracts from historical curmudgeons (Mencken was prominent among them) that I read more than four decades ago and can no longer find. I can only dream of aspiring to the heights SC regularly reaches. He recently vented about creationism in a post titled The Curmudgeon’s Guide to Creation Science. (Well, he actually vents regularly, but this one is a keeper.) Highly recommended!

Like I have pointed out in my blog many times there are different kinds of theists. Some of them are extremely fundamental and are driven more by what they feel (subjective experiences) than on actual empirical evidence those are aptly named fundamentalists. Then there are those that are not as obsessed with the literal translation of the bible nor with some of the older traditions found in the scriptures; they claim to love science and reason. But they are willing to compromise reason for their beliefs which they see as reasonable, those are aptly named liberals.
